Elsie Culp

February 20, 1931 ~ February 1, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old
Gayle Trechsel Culp, age 85, passed away in Chattanooga, TN after a long illness on February 1, 2017 while surrounded by family members and loved ones. She is preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband Charles Allen Culp, her parents, Lillian Fearn Trechsel Stubbs and Frank Rinard Trechsel, Sr., brother Frank R. Trechsel, Jr. and sister Lillian Trechsel Coyle.
Gayle graduated from Ramsay High School, and attended Randolph-Macon College and the University of Alabama. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Gayle was also quite a talented singer, participating in Birmingham musical theater, and a lover of Gershwin and Ella Fitzgerald. She also was a gifted artist, with a unique eye for faces, and enjoyed painting portraits and landscapes.
Gayle’s perhaps most underrated talent was her quick, sharp, and often unexpected wit - which she managed to wield with great aplomb until the very end. She was also tender-hearted, always helping others in need; and, when the moment called for it, she stood up for others, and for what was right.
She rose to the challenge of raising five sons, and is survived by John Cox Hall (Jane) of Birmingham, Edward Porter Hall (Cindy) of Gainesville, FL, David Garrett Hall (Jan) of Alex City, Charles Allen Culp, Jr. (Leslie) of Chattanooga, Stephen Andrew Culp (Karen) of Chattanooga, 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Jane Goad Trechsel, and brother-in-law Dr. Dan Joseph J Coyle, Jr.
The family is grateful to the staff at Alexian Village of Tennessee and Prestige Senior Home Care for the outstanding care provided to Gayle during her illness and their genuine love for her.
Services will be held in Birmingham at the Chapel at Independent Presbyterian Church at 2:30 pm on Friday, February 10th.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Cornerstone Schools of Alabama.
