William "Bill" James Tonkin

William “Bill” James Tonkin, 83, passed away on the morning of May 17, 2023 at home surrounded by loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Rubye Tonkin and sister in law, Elena Tonkin.

He is survived by his wife, Dianne Tonkin; Son, Brian (Martha) Tonkin; Daughter, Laura Allen; Step daughter, Christy (Scott) Houston; Sister, Kay (John) Lacey; and a Brother, Bob Tonkin; Two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Bill earned his Eagle Scouts 1954. After he graduated high school, Bill joined the Air Force where he served as a radio operator; he went on to complete four years college.

Bill served in many organizations: The Elks of Savannah GA, President of Exchange Club, Habitat for Humanity, Chamber of Commerce, Christ Church in Savannah GA, Anglian Church of Redeemer Chattanooga and Welcome Home of Chattanooga. Bill lead the Saturday Morning Men's Breakfast Group, and was a volunteer server at Chattanooga Community Kitchen.

During and after his professional career, after retiring Bill and his wife, Dianne rode their motorcycles all over the United States, camping and riding some great back roads. Bill also had the opportunity to ride motorcycles while touring in Europe. What an adventure Bill’s life was.  

The family will receive friends Monday, June 5, 2023 at 11:00 am at Anglian Church of Redeemer located 104 McBrien Rd., Chattanooga, TN 37411.  Service will follow at 12:00 noon at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Welcome Home Chattanooga or Anglican Church of the Redeemer building fund.
