Sharon McCullough Tucker The world lost a true sports fan on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, when Sharon Tucker peacefully passed away from heart failure at the age of 67. She was a native of Chattanooga and long-time resident of Signal Mountain and Sanibel, FL.
Sharon was born in 1951 to Hal and Betsy McCullough. She grew up in Brainerd and spent countless happy days as a part of the Cumberland Youth Foundation’s summer activities. She was a proud graduate of Brainerd High School and the University of Tennessee. Professionally, she enjoyed three distinct chapters in her career, working first as a teacher and coach at Girls Preparatory School, then for the tennis division of ProGroup, Inc., and finally as the long-time president of the Andrew Thompson Co.
Sharon had a wide variety of interests. In her youth, she was an avid softball player. In adulthood, she played tennis and particularly golf. She was very active in the local women’s golf community, competing in and volunteering at tournaments for many years. Among her many loves were (in no particular order) the Vols and Braves, Krystal hamburgers, the Brainerd Boosters, fishing, Peyton Manning, wood working, Dolly Parton, politics, Hallmark Christmas movies, the stock market, Jimmy Buffett, thoroughbred horse racing, Pat Summitt, her Pi Phi sorority, and collecting baseball cards. She was preceded in death by her father Hal and her husband Jack Tucker, to whom she was devotedly married for 34 years before his passing in 2014.
She is survived by her mother Betsy McCullough of Ringgold, GA; sister and brother-in-law Cindy and Terry Ziegler of Chattanooga and nephews Matthew and Andy Ziegler; step-son Jeff Tucker of Chattanooga; step-daughter Lindsay Berry and her husband Randy, of Atlanta; step-son Andy Tucker and his wife Tara, and grandkids Haydon, Jack, and Cate Tucker, all of Signal Mountain. Sharon’s family would like to thank the staffs of Memorial Hospital, Alexian Village, and Avalon Hospice for their attentive and respectful care in her final weeks.
Sharon was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, where a celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, January 6, at 2 p.m., with a visitation following the service. Another service will be held on Sanibel, FL, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, on Wednesday, January 16, at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made in Sharon’s honor to Mountain Education Foundation, Signal Mountain Social Services, or the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) on Sanibel, FL. Arrangements entrusted to Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, TN 37415. www.lanefh.com. 423-877-3524
