Tribute

Robert Louis Wilbanks, Jr., 70, died peacefully on December 23, 2021 at his home in Red Bank, Tennessee. Bobby was a native Chattanoogan. He is survived by his mother, Wanda Wilbanks; his two children, Matthew Wilbanks (Sallie) and Kate Shafer (John); his two grandchildren, Margot Shafer and Jack Shafer; and soon to arrive granddaughter, Sutton Louise Wilbanks.

Bobby was born on December 4, 1951 in Chattanooga to Robert and Wanda Wilbanks. He is the oldest of four siblings leaving behind David Wilbanks (Lynn), Melanie Wade (Terry), and Joanna Trippe (John). Growing up along Hunter’s Ridge, Bobby attended schools in Red Bank, earned his Eagle Scout rank, and graduated from Tennessee Tech with a degree in Biology.

He was a very proud veteran, serving as a Naval aviator from 1974-1976 at NAS Pensacola, Florida and NAS Whidbey Island, Washington. The internment in Chattanooga National Cemetery with his fellow veterans and military funeral honors are to celebrate his service.

Bobby retired from a 20 year career with Pfizer, enjoyed being a handyman and taking care of his mother, Wanda. Bobby was an avid fiddle player and active in the local Bluegrass community, “Sunday Jam,” attending festivals and weekly playalongs.

A Graveside service will be held Thursday, December 30, 2021 at 11:00 am in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family requests that donations to honor Bobby’s memory be given to the Boy Scouts of America - Cherokee Council (https://www.cherokeeareabsa.com/donate-now#) or the Knights of Columbus - St. Jude.
