Pierre Volkmar Andreae, age 90, died peacefully at his home in Chattanooga on July 5. He was the son of Fritz Andreae and Louise Rast Andreae, and was a beloved and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He was born in Anniston, Alabama to Fritz and Louise, both Swiss immigrants, and moved with his family to Chattanooga at age 10. He graduated from Central High School. After earning a degree in engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology he studied at ETH in Zurich, Switzerland on a Fulbright scholarship. During a trip to Brussels, he met Nancy Thacher, of Boston, who was to become his wife. After a wedding in Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1954, the couple settled in Chattanooga, where they enjoyed 49 years of marriage and raised three sons.
Pierre had a long career as a metallurgical engineer at Combustion Engineering. He and Nancy were longtime members of Pilgrim Congregational Church where he served as treasurer for more than 20 years. The couple was in two local bridge clubs and loved traveling together and with friends and family. Pierre played tennis well into his eighties at Manker Patten Tennis Club where he was made a lifetime member.
Pierre was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and his sister Lorna. He is survived by his sister; Marie Claire Hale, his three sons, Peter (Suzanne), David, and Timothy (Nathalie); five grandchildren, Morgan, John, Phillip, Thacher, and Tom; and three great grandchildren, Addison, Clara and Jason Pierre.
A memorial service will be held at Pilgrim Congregational Church at 400 Glenwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37404 on August 10th at 3 PM with a reception to follow in the church. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the church or the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston in memory of Pierre Andreae to support cancer research and patient care at www.dana-farber.org/gift.
