Naomi Graham Burkart

April 24, 1920 ~ August 29, 2021 (age 101)


Naomi Graham Burkart, 101, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 29, 2021 with family by her side in her home at Alexian Village on Signal Mountain. A native of Chattanooga, Naomi grew up on Missionary Ridge moving later with her family to Lookout Mtn. She was Educated at Notre Dame High School and Nazareth College in Bardstown, KY. With the beginning of World War II, Naomi was one of the young ladies trained by the TVA as a drafting and engineering aid to meet the shortage of men for the positions. During that time she met and married 1st Lt. Clinton Foster Goodwin Jr. of Heverhill, MA and moved to Ft. Campbell, KY. Lt. Goodwin was killed in April 1945 in action in Lipzeg Germany leaving his wife and 3 month old son. In 1948, she married James Alphonse Burkart and enjoyed 61 years of happiness raising their six children. Being of the Catholic faith, they were instrumental in building Our Lady of The Mount Catholic Church. In later years together they traveled extensively in the United States and abroad. Naomi has been a long time member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the ladies of Charity. Preceding her in death were her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Landis Lanier Graham, husband, James A. Burkart, sister, Elizabeth Davenport, brother, Jack Graham, infant son, John Michael Burkart, and daughter-in-law, Carol Cowan Goodwin. She is survived by three sons, C. Foster Goodwin III, James A Burkart Jr. (Diane), and William A, Burkart (Tammi); three daughters, Connie Burkart Leonard (Jack), Marjorie Burkart Borchers (Tom), and Susan Burkart Wesley (Vic); eighteen grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Her funeral Mass will be offered at noon Saturday, September 4 at St. Augustine Church on Signal Mt. with visitation at the church beginning at 11:00 AM.
