Marjorie Mae Horton

July 10, 1938 ~ January 7, 2023 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Tribute

Marjorie Ma Horton age 84, of Knoxville, Tennessee, formerly of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away Saturday January 7, 2023

When Marjorie and her sister, SueAnn, graduated from high school, they moved to Richmond, VA. Mother worked in bookkeeping in a bank , while SueAnn went to nursing school. One day, as Marjorie sat in her apartment with the front door open, a young man was walking by. He said hello to Marjorie & asked her out. When she asked him his name, he told her it was Bill Horton. Even though Marjorie worried that she was 4 years older than Bill, 6 months later they were married. This was the beginning of a 53 year journey through life together from Richmond, VA to Johnson City, to Chattanooga, TN.
Just like Bill knew immediately, we all know Marjorie Mae Horton was a very special person.
She was born in coal mining country in Wise, VA. One of 5 children born to Bill & Edith Garwood. She had a very poor childhood that included having to wear clothes made from donated men’s clothes & potato sacks and running home from school to eat a meager lunch of things like beans. Marjorie was a tom boy and loved to play outside.
Our mother went on to raise John, Karen, & Eric, being a stayat home mom. She also raised our father, Bill . She was always there to help us through everything & sometimes we did not make it easy. We took her for granted at times, but as adults, we now know what a sacrifice she made to be the best mom to us we could have wished for. She was a wonderful cook, bird watcher, & Atlanta baseball fan.
From this woman came three children, John, Karen, & Eric, and from them came our mom’s most prized possessions: Mikayla, Megan, Cody, Kelsey, & Aidan, Brooklyn & Jonathan. From her grandchildren, came great grandchildren Noah & Griffin. Her love & devotion to her grandchildren knew no boundaries. They made her happy and gave her so much joy.
As she was devoted to all of us, so she was also devoted to her husband Bill, when dementia changed everything. She worked hard trying to keep him happy and healthy. Her devoted daughter in law, April took excellent care of her in her final days & we all appreciate & thank her for her loving care.
So this woman who gave us her life, her love, & her time; what are our best memories of her? For me it was having her friendship as an adult and realizing just how smart she really was. She knew so much, gave good advice, & was a good listener.
As much as we will all love & miss her, she is with God & she is blessed to now walk freely with no pain, holding hands with Bill, and the rest of her family in Heaven. As she was known to us as Marjie, mom, mother & mammaw, this coal miner’s daughter was the best wife, mother, & grandmother we could have asked for. We love you & will see you again soon.
