Tribute

Marilyn Van Arsdale, 78, was born in Parma, Ohio in 1943 to Oliver and Betty (Scantlebury) Buhl. She graduated from Parma Senior High School and earned a B.A. degree from Bowling Green State University (Ohio) in 1965. The same month, she married Fred Van Arsdale III, whose career as an executive sales professional in the truck equipment industry took the couple to New Jersey and New Hampshire prior to settling in Chattanooga in the late 1970s. They were members of the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club for over 20 years. Fred died of pancreatic cancer in 2006 and Marilyn was instrumental in the formation of a local chapter of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.  She worked tirelessly to raise funds for research and education about the disease, and was passionate about comforting others who were struggling with the disease. Known for her sense of style, interior design, energy, enthusiasm, and organizational skills, Marilyn was actively involved in her neighborhood and community. While a member at Chattanooga Country Club, she enjoyed serving on the Anniversary Committee.  She served as the captain for her ladies’ doubles tennis team for many years and enjoyed playing mixed doubles as well.  Her love for the game continued into her later years, never missing a tournament on TV.  She served on the Welcome Committee in her neighborhood, always eager to meet new faces.  She was a member of Hixson United Methodist Church. In April 2021 she learned that she would be battling advanced stage ovarian cancer.  Her son Keith, his family and her remarkable friends and neighbors were invaluable in assisting and supporting her while she lived at home and endured treatments. Marilyn lost her fight with cancer on July 18, 2021. She is survived by her son, Keith Thomas Van Arsdale, daughter-in-law Janice, beloved granddaughters, Natalie and Brooke, of Dallas, Texas; sister, Joanne Auth; brother-in-law David Auth of Gainesville, Florida; sister-in-law, Linda (Van Arsdale) Suber of  Perrysburg, Ohio; and nephew Dennis Suber, Bay Village, Ohio. A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary Friday, July 23rd at 1:30pm. At Hixson United Methodist Church, 5301 Old Hixson Pike, Hixson, TN 3743, with a reception to follow at Mountain City Country Club, 729 Chestnut Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402 from 2:45-5:00pm.
