Tribute

Juanita “Tootsie” Cowley, 91, of Hixson, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 29, 2020. She had a long and happy life and will be greatly missed by her family. Tootsie was born in 1929 in Detroit, Michigan. She resided in North Chattanooga for most of her life and graduated from Red Bank High School. In the late 1940s, she began working at Miller Brothers department store as a salesperson, buyer, and a model. Tootsie loved her job and won many sales awards at yearly conventions during her career. She continued in this capacity at Proffitt’s and Belk department stores until she decided to retire at 80 years old. Tootsie was happiest when she was spending time with her family and working alongside her husband and siblings on rental properties. Throughout her life she was devoted to her family. She is preceded in death by her husband of over 40 years, Drew Cowley, her parents, Edgar and Lillian King, sister, Maxine Dodd, and sister-in-law, Sandra King. She is survived by brothers, John Jesse and Bill King (Ann Eidson), many nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Manor House Assisted Living & Memory Care for the kindness shown to Tootsie and the excellent care she received while living there. Due to the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be a private graveside service.
