Dr. Joseph Leslie Milburn, age 89, of Signal Mountain, passed away June 4, 2018. Born in Morristown, TN to the late Rev. James Earl and Hazel S. Milburn. Dr. Milburn graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1947 and the University of Chattanooga in 1951.
After serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, he graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1958 with his M.D. degree. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1966 and also Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1968. He was a member of the Surgical Department at the Trover Clinic in Madisonville, KY from 1965 until 1993. During that time, he was active in teaching at the University of Louisville and was named Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery. He was President of the Kentucky Division of the American Cancer Society from 1984 - 1985 and, in 1992, was named a Lifetime Member of the Board of American Cancer Society Kentucky Division.
Dr. Milburn returned to Chattanooga in 1993. For the next eight years, he became active in the teaching program at the Chattanooga Unit of the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga. He was a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery and was awarded the Baroness Award for Teaching Excellence in 1997.
He was Member of Signal Crest United Methodist Church.
Dr. Milburn was also preceded in death by siblings, Mary Nola Milburn Tilson, Laura Ruth Milburn Clark, James Earl Milburn Jr., John William Milburn and Herbert Theodore Milburn.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Laura Lee Milburn of Signal Mountain, TN; sons, Dr. Joseph L. Milburn Jr and his wife Dr. Laura Spears of Dallas, TX, and David M. Milburn and his wife Judy of Madison, AL; daughter, Catherine L. Milburn and her husband David Krusenklaus of Lexington, KY; granddaughters, Mary Brynn Milburn and Joan Leslie Milburn, both of Dallas, TX; grandsons, Adam Krusenklaus and Dustin McNeal and his wife Teryn, all of Nashville, TN; great-grandson, Harrison McNeal and great-granddaughter, Avery McNeal, both of Nashville, TN.

The Funeral Service will be 1pm Saturday June 9, 2018 in the Chapel of Alexian Village 437, Alexian Way, Signal Mountain, TN with Pastor Rowland Buck officiating. Inurnment service will be 9:30am Sunday June 10, 2018 at Grace Episcopal Church, 20 Belvoir Ave, Chattanooga, TN with the Rev. April Berends officiating.
