Joan Visser MacDuffee, 94, passed away gently on February 16, 2020 from congestive heart failure at her home of the last 8 years in the amazingly loving and caring community, NHC Sequatchie in Dunlap, TN. A graduate of Iowa State University and a social worker for the State of Alabama for 25 years, her impact extended far beyond the limits of her profession. She loved unconditionally and was affectionately known by hundreds as “Mama Jo.” Everyone who knew her will always remember her radiant, luminous smile. Throughout her life, she changed most people she met with her love, generosity and faith. She was born to Ruth and Peter Visser of Bussey, Iowa on November 11, 1925. In 1946, she married Russell Clinton MacDuffee, who preceded her in death in 1963. Left to honor and remember her are her brother, Daryl (Carol) Visser; three daughters: Carol MacDuffee (Larry) Hanson, Melody MacDuffee and Libby MacDuffee; her five grandchildren: Joshua (Laura) Woodward, Annah (John) Joseph, Libby (Ben) Bruno, Megan Metzger and Patrick (Amie Rose Anserson) Metzger; and her six great-grandchildren: Patrick and Cody Woodward, Claire and Juliet Joseph, and Rosalie and Joey Bruno. In keeping with the simplicity of Jo’s wishes, there will be a small, family-only memorial service. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to her daughter, Melody’s non-profit, of which Jo was a proud supporter, at www.soulofsomanya.net. Arrangements entrusted to Lane Funeral Home – 601 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, Tennessee 37415. (423) 877-3524 Lanefh.com
