Jean Robertson Brye, 83, of Signal Mountain passed away on June 11, 2022. Jean was born and grew up in Waverly, Iowa. She received a B.A. from Iowa State Teachers College and an M.Ed. from the University of Chattanooga.

Jean married Bruce Brye, her high school sweetheart, one week after graduation from ISTC. She then taught school for three years in Iowa before she and Bruce moved to Signal Mountain in 1963 when he was employed by TVA.

Jean was a guidance counselor at Red Bank High School for 31 years. She served as cheerleader sponsor, newspaper advisor, and Advanced Placement coordinator. She was chairman of the Blue Ribbon Schools committee when Red Bank High was named a National School of Excellence.

Jean served as chair of the Signal Mountain Library board and a member of the Friends of the Library Board of Directors. She volunteered for over 30 years at the library.

Jean was an active member of Signal Mountain Baptist Church where she served as church clerk, taught Sunday School, sang in the Sanctuary Choir, and volunteered as choir librarian. She was also the coordinator of the monthly Adult Fellowship programs and activities. She was active in her Sunday school class where she sent cards on a regular basis to shut-ins, college students, and military personnel from church. She often provided transportation for church members. For 5 years, Jean taught a weekly conversational English class for adult international students in a program sponsored by the Hamilton County Baptist Association. When Jean wasn’t serving others, she was enjoying playing clarinet in the Chattanooga Community Orchestra and Signal Mountain Baptist church orchestra.

In 2004, Jean was named the Signal Mountain Community Guild Women of the Year.

Jean is survived by her brother, Robert (Lois) Robertson; Nephews Mark (Kim) Robertson, Greg (Leslie) Robertson; brother in law James (Mary) Brye; and several nieces and nephews. She has a lifetime of friends she has worked and served with on Signal Mountain. She will be fondly missed by the Red Bank High School and Signal Mountain communities.
