Harriet Watson Bond, 94, a longtime Chattanoogan, educator and noted teacher of the Bible, died Wednesday, May 19, 2021. Mrs. Bond taught Bible history at Brainerd, Hixson and Chattanooga high schools as well as in elementary schools for a total of 37 years and ultimately became supervisor. She also was a counselor at Chattanooga High for seven years. She taught Bible in Sunday school and in night Women’s Ministry circles at her church, First Presbyterian, as well as in Inner-City Missions. She served on her church World Missions Committee for decades. She was named Woman of the Year in 1981 by the Women in the Church. She was educated at St. Mary’s School in Sewanee, Tennessee, the University of Chattanooga and later at UTC and at Covenant College. She had been active in the Cumberland Hiking Club, the North Chattanooga Book Club, Delta Kappa Gamma teachers sorority and the Scenic City Women’s Network. Mrs. Bond was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Bond Jr., who passed after seven years of marriage; parents, Lucy N. and Col. W. W. Watson; and brother, Frank N. Watson. She is survived by son, John H. (Janice) Bond, Signal Mountain; daughter, Lucy (Rick) Foster, Colorado Springs, Colorado; grandchildren: Tim (Megan) Bond, Signal Mountain, Matt (Drexel) Bond, Chattanooga, Stephen (Sarah) Foster, Denver, Stacey (Kyle) Van Buren, New Smyrna Beach, Florida and Jen Foster, San Marcos, California; eight great-grandchildren; five nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Cara Caldwell Watson, South Yarmouth, Massachusetts. Visitation will be held Sunday, June 6, 2021 from 2:30 to 4:00 PM in the fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church with a memorial service to follow in the sanctuary. Pastors Chris Ehlers and Rick Foster will be officiating. A private burial will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery. Visit www.lanefh.com to share words of comfort.
