Edgar Darden Newman, died October 22, 2021 at his home on Signal Mountain with his family at his side.
Mr. Newman was born August 22, 1925, the son of William Lawrence and Moselle Mitchell Newman, in Rome, Georgia.
The family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee where he graduated from City High School. He attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the University of Chattanooga.
Darden served in the U.S. Army in World War II and was stationed in England and Germany before returning home. He worked as branch manager for Burkart-Schier Chemical Company in Knoxville and later owned and operated Mid-State Chemical and Southern Industrial Sales in Chattanooga.
He was an avid private pilot, receiving his license in June of 1946. He purchased a war surplus Vultee BT-13 and took to the skies. Later, he earned his multi-engine and instrument ratings. Church activities, golf, model trains, and family outings and vacations filled his time when confined to earth. He authored a novel, “The Canadian Connection” and an autobiography, “Child of the Great Depression”.
Darden taught Sunday School at Red Bank Baptist Church for many years before becoming a member of Signal Crest Methodist Church.
Darden is survived by his devoted wife of 72 years, Mary Lynn Byrd Newman, his children, Lawrence Stephen (Heidi) Newman, and Gail Ann (John) Cooke, his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
At his request a grave-side service will be observed on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 1:00pm at Hamilton Memorial Gardens officiated by associate pastor Bill Thornton.
