Dr. Richard Edmund Schluessel, MD

Richard Edmund Schluessel, MD, FACP, 73, passed peacefully on May 7, 2022, after a brief, acute illness. Dr. Schluessel was a newcomer to Chattanooga but a longtime practitioner of medicine who was, from the age of sixteen, by turns an orderly, an EMT, a firefighter, a nurse, and a doctor. He was ABD at Emory University but chose instead to get his MD in Angers, France. Subsequently, his career saw him attend to the poor and wealthy alike across three continents, as he gained widespread respect and admiration for his easy way with patients and dedication to healing and saving lives. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund W. Schluessel and Olga Murjahn of New York. He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Cynthia Ann Conti; and his two sons: Edmund R., a teacher in Helsinki, Finland; and Eric, a professor of history in Washington, DC.

A private memorial service was held on  Sunday May 15, 2022.
