Carol Anne Cowan Goodwin, 75, was called home to eternal life on June 25, 2021, surrounded by her family. A native of Chattanooga, Carol attended school at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Notre Dame Elementary and High School (’63) and UTC where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She spent more than 30 years away from Chattanooga building a family and supporting her husband’s career before finally returning in 1995 to care for her aging parents. In fact, Carol’s life here on earth was guided by the tremendous love she had for her family, friends, and strangers. She was not just the mom to three children; she was a mom to many. She built a home open to all and would always greet you with a friendly smile, hug, and a warm M&M cookie if you were lucky. She was an amazing cook, who took pride in hosting many gatherings with family and friends — truly believing in “the more the merrier.” Carol was known for her generosity of time, talents, and desire to give back to her community. She spent year after year volunteering at her children’s schools as room parent, PTO officer, hot lunch server and fundraising chair. She never missed an athletic event or school function and always encouraged her children to reach their full potential by empowering them to pursue their dreams. A breast cancer survivor herself, Carol helped others through their own battles at the Mary Ellen Locher Breast Cancer Center, logging more than 2,000 volunteer hours during her years there. Her own experience and kind heart brought comfort to many. Carol was preceded in death and welcomed home by her parents, Leland and Frances Cowan, brothers, Michael and Christopher Cowan, and son-in-law, Roderic Johnson. She is survived by her high school sweetheart, love of her life, and husband of 54 years, Clinton “Fos” Goodwin III, three children; Christy Goodwin (Jeff) Tenney, Beth Goodwin Johnson and Clinton F. Goodwin IV, brother, David Cowan, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous brother- and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 1, 2021, from 10 to 11 a.m. at St Jude Catholic Church in Hixson. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow immediately after at 11 a.m. with Father Charlie Burton officiating. A private graveside service for the immediate family will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorials to be made the Mary Ellen Locher Breast Cancer Center or St Jude Catholic Church in Hixon.
