John M. Hasek died on Wednesday January 17, 2018 at the age of 99. He is survived by members of the Leslie Lee Givens family, neighbors, friends and special long time friend, Louise Tone.
John was born on January 9, 1919 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was the only child of his parents, Milton T. and Elsie F. Hasek.
After graduation from Cedar Rapids Public School System, John entered Iowa State College where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, the College Marching Band and the ROTC drum and Bugle Corps.
After completion of the advanced military studies, John was given a commission of Second Lieutenant Field Artillery in the US Army Reserve. With World War II in progress, he was immediately called to active duty and served at Fort Sill Oklahoma, Fort Campbell Kentucky and Camp Polk Louisiana. While at Camp Polk Louisiana, he was assigned to the Eighth Armored Division. He rose to the rank of Captain and commanded a battery of field artillery both in the states and in the European Theater during World War II. At the end of World War II John returned to Iowa State College and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Forestry.
He accepted Employment with Chicago Mill and Lumber Company and was transferred to Chattanooga in 1950. John traveled all southeastern states as a representative for Chicago Mill.
After eight years of travel, John reassigned Chicago Mill and accepted employment with Combustion Engineering where he served in various administrative positions until his retirement in 1984 with 26 years of service.
John attended Red Bank Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the American Legion Post and the Chattanooga Order of Elks. He liked to play golf, travel, bowl and enjoyed all outside activities. He was a regular participant of the Elderhostel Program sponsored by Auburn University.
Funeral Services will be held at Lane Funeral Home on Ashland Terrace Wednesday January 24, 2018 at 11:00 am with Reverend Eric Duble officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
